Orland City Council to decide what district elections will look like

ORLAND, Calif. - The Orland City Council is set to decide what district elections will look like, a shift that changes how city council members and potentially even the mayor are elected.

The decision could mean splitting the city into 4 or 5 districts.

The process started when a resident pointed out California law requires cities like Orland to switch to district elections. Cities that don't make the change often get sued, spend a lot trying to fight it and still end up switching anyway, so the mayor told Action News Now that the risk of not doing it now is just too high.

Right now, Orland uses what's called at-large elections with no districts, meaning every voter can vote for every council seat, no matter where they live. With this change, the city could be split into 4 or 5 districts, so in most cases, voters would only be voting for 1 representative for the area where they live.
