Maxine Waters, Dr. Dre at odds in Compton school bond campaign

An unlikely dustup between two South Los Angeles icons — Dr. Dre and Rep. Maxine Waters — is roiling Compton’s political establishment ahead of Tuesday’s vote on a $360 million school bond measure.

Dre is publicly campaigning for Measure CPT, which would fund construction of a new high school. Waters, meanwhile, is listed on a campaign mailer urging voters to reject it — a surprising development that has touched off confusion and frustration across Compton.

The slate mailer — titled “Congresswoman Maxine Waters’ Sample Ballot and Voter Recommendations” and created by her campaign committee, Citizens for Waters — urges recipients to “take Congresswoman Maxine Waters’ recommendations with you to vote.” And it says to vote “no” on Measure CPT.

Micah Ali, president of the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees, told POLITICO that he was “aghast” when he saw the mailer.
