CA-IC: Heading to fall vote, Jane Kim touts single-payer fire-insurance plan
Jane Kim is fairly well known in San Francisco politics. She could soon become a major player statewide.
After winning nearly 26% of the vote and counting in a crowded field in the June 2 primary election, the former city supervisor and school-board president is in the lead in the race for state insurance commissioner, virtually guaranteeing herself a spot in the November election.
Kim, San Franciscos first Korean-American supervisor, is aiming for an office that has come under increasing pressure in recent years amid a growing crisis in the home-insurance market.
With wildfire losses rising and inflation leading to rising rebuilding costs, major California insurers have stopped issuing new policies and in some cases, theyve declined to renew existing ones. Theyve also increasingly passed their costs along to customers in the form of higher premiums.
