Federal law enforcement officers have begun approaching homeless campsites and policing graffiti. Large shifts of National Guard troops were expected by the end of the week.
Even before President Donald Trump announced Monday that he would take over D.C. policing, city residents started to feel it.
Social media posts showed FBI officers on the streets over the weekend in areas known for nightlife, including the U Street corridor and the Navy Yard neighborhood, where a curfew preventing teens from gathering in big groups has been in place.
Trump promised much more to come. He said his initiative would inject an overwhelming presence into D.C., with seven federal agencies expanding their reach into city life. The Drug Enforcement Administration began sending agents to homeless campsites. The U.S. Park Police was tasked with addressing graffiti in federal parks. National Guard troops were expected to staff intersections and work in shifts of 200 starting later this week. Trump said that more than 500 federal agents were deployed last week and that the effort will eventually be supplemented by an additional 800 troops from the D.C. National Guard.

And the most important question:
On Monday morning, Al said, outreach workers from the city arrived to tell him he had to be out of the area by Wednesday.
Then they gave me a packet of pretzel Goldfish, he said.
Aware of Trumps push to remove the unsheltered from D.C. streets, Al had a simple response: And go where?

Nobody knows what this show of force is supposed to be accomplishing here.

(1,575 posts)1. Why is this FBI responsibility?
I would think they would have more important things to do than oppressing the homeless.

this takes them away from important work that needs to be done.
But it distracts people from the Epstein files so....

are they transporting people to other places? Giving them any housing or social services?
It's probably cheaper to just build them some affordable housing. There could be jobs for them in maintenance and cleaning.
