During a press conference, the Deputy Chief of the US Park Police, Scott Brecht, said the officers were investigating an incident that occurred earlier in the day and were driving down Queens Stroll Place in an unmarked police vehicle. But Brecht believes that the suspects knew they were officers.
Brechet says the officers were ambushed by two men, who began shooting at the car. The officers continued driving down Queens Stroll Place, where he later pulled over. There, first responders were able to render aid to the officer shot.
MPD Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said he believes the officer was shot in the upper body, but could not give more details beyond that.
