Aparna Raj (D) wins Ward 1 councilmember primary election

WASHINGTON — For the first time in decades, D.C.’s Ward 1 councilmember primary did not include an incumbent candidate. Aparna Raj will now have a chance to usher in that moment of change for the District.

Raj is the winner of the Ward 1 councilmember Democratic primary, defeating four other candidates. The victory puts her in a strong position heading into November in heavily Democratic D.C.

The field was left open after incumbent Brianne Nadeau announced that she would not seek re-election for a fourth term.

Raj, the former Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America chair, went into Election Day with heavy support from both unions and progressive organizations in the District.
