GA-HD119: Rep. Marcus Wiedower (R) steps down from Georgia House, special election to fill seat this December

State Rep. Marcus Wiedower, a Republican from Watkinsville, announced Tuesday that he will step down from the Georgia General Assembly to focus on a growing business opportunity with Hillpointe, where he serves as vice president of external affairs.

This decision will trigger a special election this December, although the date has not been announced yet.

Wiedower represents District 121 in the state legislature, which covers south Athens, Watkinsville and portions of Oconee County. The democratic candidate for District 121 is Eric Gisler, a University of Georgia graduate and resident of the district since 2003.

All seats in the General Assembly will be on the ballot in 2026 and Democrats have pledged to challenge nearly every one, specifically eyeing the Athens area to make gains, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Republicans hold 100 seats in the Georgia state House while Democrats hold 80
