Illinois officials urge voters to mail ballots early ahead of primary election
LLINOIS (WCIA) Illinois leaders are urging voters who plan to cast their ballots by mail to send them in as soon as possible ahead of next weeks primary election.
The warning comes after changes to mail processing guidelines by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that took effect in December, which impact when mail is postmarked. Under the updated guidance, ballots may be postmarked when they are processed at a postal facility rather than when they are placed in the mail.
State officials said theyre concerned this could result in ballots mailed close to election day appearing late.
One of the officials concerned with this potential issue is Illinois Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-Illinois). The congresswoman leads a bipartisan congressional postal service caucus whose goal is to find common sense ways to improve USPS. She said voters should mail their ballot as soon as possible to ensure their voice is heard.
