Hamilton County may switch to vote centers for midterm elections. What the major change means

Hamilton County election officials want to eliminate precinct assignments in favor of vote centers during elections, saving the county money and increasing flexibility for voters.

Sixty-seven of Indiana’s 92 counties, including Marion County, have switched to the centers, which reduce the number of polling places and often require voters to travel farther to cast a ballot — but also allows them to vote at any center.

“It really increases options for people who work and weren’t able to get to the precinct in the morning or later,” County Elections Administrator Beth Sheller said.

Under the proposal, voters could cast their ballot at any of 52 vote centers across the county beginning during the May primary eleciton in 2026. Sheller that’s nearly twice as required by Indiana law, which would be 28 for Hamilton County, or one for each 10,000 registered voters.
