The East Colonnade was constructed in 1903 during the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt.

There was no need to demolish the East Colonnade. It could have been used as an access to whatever ballroom (if any) will be constructed. Trump demolished the East Colonnade out of pettiness and contempt.

As an aside, I do not think a ballroom will be built. I think the expanse lying to the east of the White House will be used as a military fortification or staging area.
