SPOTLIGHT RACE: Renee Hardman for IA-SD16 (Special Election)
Renee arrived sight unseen in 1979 to pursue her educational goals. Renee has dedicated her career to strengthening communities, championing inclusive leadership, and delivering results that make a difference for families and neighborhoods. As an At-Large Member of the West Des Moines City Council, she has helped guide one of Iowas fastest-growing suburban cities through important challengesfrom infrastructure and housing to economic growth, public safety, and community inclusion.
Renees story is rooted in service. A proud Drake University graduate with a Bachelors degree in psychology and an MBA, she built a professional career in employee development, human resources, and organizational leadership. As the founder of Hardman Consulting, she is a champion for small business owners.
In 2017, Renee made history as the first African-American woman elected to the West Des Moines City Council. She later served as Mayor Pro Tem, earning recognition for her leadership and community impact, including being named the 2020 Forty Under 40 Alumna of the Year and Top 25 Business Leaders in the Metro.
Renees deep roots in West Des Moines give her a unique perspective on what it takes to keep a city moving forward while preserving its neighborhoods and values. Shes been a steady, collaborative voice on issues like responsible development, small-business support, and creating opportunities for every resident to participate fully in their community.
Now, Renee is running for Iowa State Senate District 16 to bring that same hands-on leadership and commitment to service to the state level. She believes government works best when it listens first, leads with empathy, and focuses on practical solutions that improve everyday lives. Her priorities are clear: strong public schools, safe and welcoming communities, and a thriving Iowa economy that leaves no one behind.
