Kenner election recount ends with Mayor Michael Glaser (R) still the winner

A Kenner mayoral candidate earned one additional vote Thursday in a recount of mail-in ballots from Saturday's election but ultimately still lost the race, Jefferson Parish Registrar of Voters Dennis DiMarco said.

Mayor Michael Glaser, a Republican, narrowly won the mayor's race without a runoff with just over 50% of the vote, according to unofficial election results. His opponent, Diane Schnell, a Democrat, gained one new vote against him in the recount, putting her at 3,714 votes to his 5,586. A third candidate, Walt Bennetti, earned 16% of the votes.

Glaser barely avoided a runoff by only 20 votes total, according to the recount's findings.

Schnell, however, said Thursday's recount was not constitutional because it only counted paper mail-in ballots and no machine ballots from early voting or Election Day. She plans to file legal action in response.
