Breaking with Democrats, Maine attorney general urges court to oppose ranked-choice voting expansion

Attorney General Aaron Frey broke with state Democratic leaders last week when he filed a brief before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court opposing a proposed expansion of ranked-choice voting.

The Legislature last month asked the court to issue an advisory opinion on LD 1666, which would expand the voting method to special and general elections for governor, state senator or state representative.

Frey said in his brief that nothing has changed since 2017, when the court ruled that ranked-choice voting couldn’t apply to general election races for governor or the Maine Legislature because the state constitution said those outcomes should be determined by a “plurality” of voters.

Frey said that LD 1666 offers only cosmetic changes to the failed proposal.
