With ranked-choice tabulations underway, here's what you need to know

Ranked-choice voting tabulations are underway for the Democratic and Republican primaries for governor and the Democratic primary for Maine’s 2nd congressional district after contenders in those races failed to secure a majority of votes in last week’s election.

While there are frontrunners in each race based on first-choice votes, the tabulation process — which factors in second, third, etc., choices — could ultimately yield different final results.

The process began in Augusta at 1 p.m. Friday with staff from the Maine Secretary of State’s Office logging results from every ballot, which is expected to take several days in a process that could last as long as a week.

Once all of the ballot information is uploaded, actually running the tabulation formula in accordance to the state law is quick, with results available in a matter of minutes.
