(Detroit Free Press) Michigan residents will have a rare opportunity to view a total solar eclipse that's expected to cast a sizeable chunk of North America in darkness on April 8.
While Michigan doesn't fall in the eclipse's line of totality, the head of astronomy at the Cranbrook Institute of Science, Michael Narlock, said the state will get about 98% sun coverage. One small sliver of Monroe County falls on the edge of the path of totality.
The eclipse will begin at 1:58 p.m. and reach maximum totality, or coverage, around 3:14 p.m. in Detroit and southeast Michigan. It will conclude with a final partial eclipse at 4:27 p.m.
This years total eclipse will last longer than the one viewed by more than 20 million people in August 2017, and according to NASA wont happen again for another 20 years. Fifteen total solar eclipses have been recorded in the U.S. in the last 150 years, with the next one expected in August 2044. .............(more)

(294 posts)That tiny sliver of Michigan is the best spot IN MICHIGAN to view the eclipse, not the best spot overall. There are many better spots along the actual path of totality, which does not quite get into Michigan.

(294 posts)Yes, the post is in the Michigan forum. But I rarely go into individual forums. I scan the "Latest Discussions" tab (which contains everything from all forums), which is where I am sure many DU users will see this post, and for them, as it was for me, the title is misleading. My comment wasn't meant as a riposte to you, but information to other users who may run across this under the Latest Discussions tab.

(27,850 posts)I've so far seen one total eclipse in my life, and there is nothing quite like totality. I understand why people who can, will travel long distances to see totality.
