Sheffield takes commanding lead over Kinloch in Detroit mayor's race, poll finds
Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield has a commanding 50-percentage point lead over the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. in the mayoral race among 500 likely city voters, according to a new poll commissioned by The Detroit News and WDIV-TV (Channel 4) released Wednesday.
The Oct. 16-18 survey found Sheffield getting the support of about 65% of likely voters in the Nov. 4 general election compared with 14% who said they back Kinloch, while 20% of the voters remain undecided. About 1% said they backed another candidate. The winner of the election succeeds Mayor Mike Duggan, who has endorsed Sheffield and is running for governor in 2026 as an independent.
The Glengariff Group-conducted poll, which was conducted after the televised Oct. 15 mayoral debate, has a margin of error of plus-minus 4.4 percentage points.
"There is no mayor's race. It looks like a blowout," Glengariff Group pollster Richard Czuba said. "I do not see one ray of light for Kinloch in any of these numbers and it seems like he hasnt done anything to build any support since the primary election."
