Wayne County voters set to decide on new mayors, council, charter changes
Voters will head to the polls in several communities across Wayne County on Tuesday to decide key races, including the mayor's offices in Dearborn, Dearborn Heights and Taylor, along with several ballot measures.
Dearborn voters will decide between electing Mayor Abdullah Hammoud to a second four-year term and his challenger, Nagi Almudhegi. Hammoud made history in 2021 when he was the first Arab American and Muslim to be elected mayor in Dearborn.
In Dearborn Heights, where the council and former Mayor Bill Bazzi often battled, Councilwoman Denise Malinowski Maxwell will face Acting Mayor Mo Baydoun. Baydoun, who previously led the City Council, became acting mayor when Bazzi was recently confirmed as the U.S. ambassador to Tunisia.
All told, voters in 17 Wayne County cities, including Detroit, Hamtramck and four of the Grosse Pointes, will vote for mayor at the polls Tuesday. Twenty cities, including Livonia, Hamtramck, Westland and Northville, have City Council matchups on their ballots.
