Michigan Democrats oppose proposal to bring new voter ID standards
Lansing The Michigan Democratic Party is formally opposing a potential ballot proposal this fall that would institute new standards to check whether voters are U.S. citizens and to require them to show photo identification.
In a statement Monday, the party said its central committee had endorsed, over the weekend, no votes on both the Americans for Citizen Voting measure and a separate question that automatically appears on Michigan ballots every 16 years about convening a convention to revise the state Constitution.
"Both of these ballot measures would have disastrous effects on our state, and Michigan families cannot afford either one," said Curtis Hertel Jr., chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party. "The Michigan Democratic Party is urging voters to vote no on both measures."
While supporters of the citizenship proposal have contended it will help safeguard elections, Hertel labeled it "a blatant attempt from Michigan Republicans to make it harder to vote and disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Michiganders."
