Merrill wins special election for mayor of Isanti

Isanti Interim Mayor Luke Merrill will remain as mayor after winning a special election held Tuesday, Aug. 12. Merrill will be sworn in as mayor at the beginning of the city council meeting on Sept. 2, and will serve as mayor through Dec. 31, 2026.

There was a need for a special election due to then Isanti Mayor Jimmy Gordon being elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives and beginning his term in January. Merrill was then appointed by the city council as interim mayor until the Aug. 12 special election could be held.

Listed are the unofficial vote totals provided by the city of Isanti until the city council meets as a canvass board to review and canvass the returns of the municipal special election. The canvass board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, at Isanti City Hall.

Merrill received a total of 572 votes while candidate Jeff Johnson received a total of 402 votes. Total votes cast were 986 with one under vote and 11 write-in votes.
