Live: DFL is revoking Omar Fateh's endorsement for Minneapolis mayor

The Minnesota DFL is revoking the local party’s endorsement of state Sen. Omar Fateh in the Minneapolis mayor’s race, citing “substantial failures in the convention’s voting process.”

Fateh, a democratic socialist challenging Mayor Jacob Frey, won the endorsement at the end of a raucous July convention that prompted dozens of challenges amid delays and miscounted votes.

The state party’s Constitution, Bylaws and Rules Committee reached a decision on Tuesday, according to sources, and had planned to release its findings publicly on Friday. Instead, the party released a draft of its findings Thursday afternoon following reporting by the Minnesota Star Tribune.

4. The voting system broke down and a lot of delegates there didn't get the chance to vote.

The fact that hundreds of votes were missing or uncounted in mayoral balloting due to the breakdown of the electronic voting system.

"A novel electronic voting system was deployed the day of the convention. It malfunctioned, leading to doubts over whether all votes were being recorded.

Bear with me as I walk through the flaws in the delegate math: There were 800 available delegate seats at Saturday’s convention, but only 579 votes were recorded on the first ballot. Typically, nearly every delegate votes on every ballot.

Unfortunately, no one knows for certain how many of those 800 delegates were present, and the credentials report contained obvious mathematical errors and impossible figures. But the organizers did report a “ballot pool” prior to the first vote — the number of delegates and alternates combined. It was 1,031. This implies that if almost every delegate voted as per usual, there were about 580 delegates, 450 alternates, and 220 empty delegate seats. This arrangement is mathematically implausible — there were clearly plenty of alternates to fill those 220 empty seats.

The more likely scenario is that the number of seated delegates and upgraded alternates was somewhere closer to 750 or 780, and several hundred votes were lost in transmission.

The voting system was supposed to provide a confirmation of votes received, but hundreds of attendees reported receiving none. (I only received a confirmation after four attempts to vote.)"

To be clear, this is an opinion piece from Will Stancil. It's not clear the voting system malfunctioned or whether user error was contributing to weird numbers.

Overriding the endorsement is overkill, a terrible look, and will hurt the party on statewide races next year.

circus.

"Incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey and former Minnesota DFL Chair Mike Erlandson were among those filing challenges on Monday surrounding the procedures used to calculate delegates’ votes.

In their challenges, the Frey campaign and Erlandson each raised concerns about a new electronic voting system, claiming it was unreliable and undercounted votes on the mayoral ballot. Despite more than 750 delegates and upgraded alternates checked in for the first ballot, they say only 578 votes were counted.

“There is no plausible reason why over 20% of the total delegates/upgraded alternates would skip voting on the most hotly contested, highest-interest business of the convention,” the Frey campaign wrote.

Erlandson also claimed Minneapolis DFL leadership never confirmed a quorum before the final ballot that secured Fateh’s endorsement."

The only thing that will hurt our party statewide is if people don't vote Democratic, and those people already screwed the country in 2016 and 2014.

It was a circus.
Lol it always is.

Mike Erlandson donated to Brad Finstad in 2022, DPL my ass.

The voter outreach and activation in immigrant communities will be key next year -- the new chair said so himself. This unprecedented action is a great way to make them feel disenfranchised.

endorsement isn't rescinded.

Lisa Goodman, on the "All of Mpls" (Frey PAC) call: "I'm holding checks from a lot of people who contributed to this multi-candidate expenditure" in Ward 7 to support DFL endorsed candidate Elizabeth Shaffer. Says those checks will be withheld unless Fateh's DFL endorsement for mayor is overturned.
