DFL revocation of Minneapolis mayoral endorsement threatens to widen schism within party

The Minnesota DFL’s historic revocation of a Minneapolis mayoral race endorsement this week threatens to deepen the schism between the party’s more moderate establishment and an emboldened progressive wing.

Mayor Jacob Frey and his supporters celebrated the state party’s findings as a needed correction to a flawed convention process. Supporters of state Sen. Omar Fateh — for a month the DFL-endorsed mayoral candidate — argue that the decision reeks of insider influence. The clash comes a year before elections in which Democrats will be fighting to retain their hold on statewide offices.

Representatives of labor unions and progressive political organizations gathered Friday at City Hall to denounce the state party’s decision. They said the convention’s outcome illustrated the will of the people, namely that they don’t want Frey.

(snip)

The revocation of Fateh’s endorsement is only the latest battle between progressives and centrists, a fight that’s lasted through much of Frey’s two terms as mayor. They’ve fought over everything from housing and police reform to homeless encampments and the Hamas-Israel war. The way the endorsement played out — and was then thrown out — has furthered the distrust between the factions.

The Minneapolis DFL convention on July 19 at Target Center was marred by miscounted votes and procedural errors, prompting dozens of challenges. The state party’s Constitution, Bylaws and Rules Committee vacated the mayoral endorsement due to problems with the electronic balloting at the event.

If the process was flawed, why let the Park Board endorsements stand? WhiskeyGrinder 12 hrs ago #2

"State DFL Party Chair Richard Carlbom said in a statement Thursday that the party’s committee overseeing bylaws and rules found “substantial failures” in the Minneapolis party convention’s voting process and vacated the endorsement of Fateh."

What were they supposed to do if the system was flawed.

I take it that means the DFL isn't endorsing anyone, which is how it should be in this case, because of the irregularities.

The candidates will debate each other, and let ALL the people choose who they want in November.

As for "widening the schism within party", it won't change anything. The schism was created in 2016 and 2024 when the Supreme Court and our Democracy was at stake. and if those issues couldn't unify the party, nothing will.

Follow the will of the convention, which multiple times voted to continue with the process even though they knew there were issues.

in the Mayoral race severe enough to nullify the outcome, and appeals were filed in the Mayoral endorsements. Were there PUBLIC reporting and appeals of similar issues or irregularities with the Park Board endorsements, and if so why weren't appeals made on the Park Board endorsements? That does not mean there were not irregularities with the Park Board endorsements though, and if there were, then those endorsements should have also been rescinded also. The question with the Park Board endorsements, did anyone appeal the Park Board endorsements like they did the Mayoral endorsements, and if there were irregularities, why didn't they?

Here are the problems with the mayoral process:

The Excel spreadsheet used for voting tabulation was "substantially flawed"

There were missing votes on the first ballot which led to an undercount of 176 votes.

There was improper candidate elimination because of the miscounted votes, and candidate Davis was WRONGLY eliminated after the first ballot, even though he received enough support to continue.

The committee found that the credentials sheet was left unsecured and accessed by non-committee members, and the entire credentials book for Ward 5 was lost.

As a result of the miscounted votes, mayoral candidate DeWayne Davis was wrongly eliminated after the first ballot despite receiving enough support to advance.

All those issues were documented by evidence, and there was no documented appeals or procedural problems for the park board races, therefore no basis for a similar reversal.

As a result the DFL removed the mayoral endorsement, barred the Minneapolis DFL from endorsing a candidate, and place the city party on 2 years probation.

The question is, was the system flawed or not? If it was flawed, what should be done?

If people don't like it, then then they should show it to the DFL committee that the problems listed in the report are false or fabricated.

In the end, what are they going to do? The election is in November, the whole city will decide from the list of candidates who they want to be their mayor on November 4, 2025.

The following document the issues, which starts in the section: "Types of complaints about the July 19 convention"

https://minneapolistimes.com/minneapolis-dfl-convention-a-summary-of-challenges-and-complaints/

In my view the caucus is a flawed process. It discriminates against people who have mobility issues and can't attend, among other things. It limits voter participation, and empowers a small number of committed party activists, in contrast to a primary. However, that is how Minneapolis wants to run it.
