Replacing St. Louis school drinking fountains that have lead contamination is taking longer than expectedOfficials expect it will be at least a few more weeks before all drinking fountains at St. Louis Public Schools are free of high levels of lead and back in service.
Of 48 drinking fountains and 40 sinks the district identified as having excessive lead levels, 40 fountains and 10 sinks are still out of service, Roger CayCe, the district’s deputy superintendent of operations, said at the meeting of the Special Administrative Board on Thursday.
The replacement is taking longer than officials had hoped. A shipment of 45 drinking fountains just arrived Wednesday.
The new fountains, which cost a total of about $84,200, will take weeks to be installed and tested in 20 schools, CayCe said.
