New Missouri laws take effect Thursday
Laws going into effect Aug. 28 include repealing mandatory paid sick leave, hazing penalties, new regulations on temporary license tags and a ban on child marriage
Mandatory paid sick leave ends
During the last legislative session, the Missouri General Assembly struck down the mandatory paid sick leave portion from Proposition A in House Bill 567.
Voters approved Proposition A in the November 2024 election with 57.5% of votes cast in favor of the measure. The original language required that most employers provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked to their employees beginning May 1. Additionally, Proposition A increased Missouri's minimum wage to $13.75 on Jan. 1 of this year and to $15 starting Jan. 1, 2026. That part of Proposition A will stay in place.
Temporary vehicle tags
Two new rules about temporary vehicle license plates are included in Senate Bill 28.
First, temporary vehicle tags issued by vehicle dealerships will be valid for 30 days instead of 90 days. Second, buyers must pay sales taxes at the dealership before they receive temporary tags.
Temporary tags will eventually be fully phased out in this new system.
