Need some advice

My ex passed away Friday morning in Carson NV. Our disabled son who lives with me was notified since he listed as next of kin. He has four children and all are in agreement on division of assets equally.
We drove up from Sacramento to make arrangements and secure his property.

Unfortunately my ex does not have a will and we are unsure if his estate needs to go through probate. From what we know it is under 100k.
We thought we might petition the court to set aside probate.
Not sure how to get legal advice or an attorney we can trust. It is such a small estate that could be eaten up by fees.
My children are not financially well off.
Our youngest is has been disabled since he was a child and our middle son is battling ACC cancer.
My question is has anyone in this forum gone through this or could recommend a law firm.
Thanks for listening. P

but the state I live in, if there is no will, it automatically goes to probate. Maybe ask on the Nevada forum, see if someone can recommend a pro bono lawyer to help you out?

Good luck, hope it gets settled quickly and relatively smoothly.

That said, is there a university in or near Sacramento with a law school? Sometimes law schools have programs where people of limited means can consult with students and teachers as an outreach to the community. Maybe this will work for you. I have no idea.

Try "legal aid Sacramento."

This came up right away. This is not a recommendation.

Unfortunately my ex lived and passed in Nevada
Thought I posted in that forum.
I was hoping someone in that forum might have gone through this and could recommend a law firm.
I would never take legal advice from internet because a lot is AI generated and may not be correct or updated on recent laws

You almost certainly need to get a NV specialist lawyer to proceed.

We are going back up tomorrow and look into that.
I just don't want it to cost my kids more to settle the estate than what it is worth.

My research has come up with so many answers to the same question.

We will be going back up on Tuesday so will probably contact the court and file probate.
The problem we find is securing his motorcycle and 5th wheel. Don't want to move but worried about theft with no one there.
Just thought someone in the nevada forum might have been through this and might know a law firm I could trust.
