Thousands of residents in Paterson, Prospect Park, Haledon, and North Haledon remain under a boil water advisory (and many without water at all) after a 30-inch main broke near Hinchliffe Stadium on Friday, Aug. 8, according to Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC).
Repairs are expected to be completed within 24 to 36 hours, PVWC said Sunday, Aug. 10. Crews have begun a more complex approach to cut off the flow in hopes of isolating the leak today. Residents may still have low or no water pressure and discolored water.
Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory, PVWC said in the update. The advisory will stay in place until testing confirms the water is safe to drink.
Once pressure is restored, PVWC will flush the system, test for bacteria, and lift the advisory if results are satisfactory which could take one to two days after pressure returns.

I had to snip several paragraphs, so there is more at the link. There is also a picture of the work that's underway.

(25,393 posts)for a water company in New Jersey, I can tell you that the infrastructure is pretty old, and leaks pop up all the time. It was only a matter of waiting for a big one like this. I'm sure glad that I'm not staffing the phone lines at this company!

(52,820 posts)My mayor (Mohammed Khairullah) just reported on Facebook that the repair should be completed by Wednesday at the latest and the water should be potable by Friday or Saturday.
We can flush and take showers now but don't drink the water (even boiling) and no wasting water.
We have come together as a community with neighbors looking after one another.
I suppose a blessing is that TSF hasn't involved himself.

(41,187 posts)It's great that you can take showers now. This time of year with no shower would be pretty difficult, keeping one from doing outdoor tasks like garden weeding or lawn maintenance.
Hah, yes you are lucky TSF hasn't involved himself. I think he got his shower peeves out of the way earlier this year with --get this--an executive order getting rid of low-flow shower heads.
