This New Jersey home has some serious ties to the Revolutionary War.
It was ransacked, more than once, by British troops looking for hidden treasures. It was used as a food storage facility during the Revolutionary War because of its 20-inch thick walls. And, George Washington slept in the primary bedroom, leaving behind his breakfast dishes and a half a glass of wine, according to local historians.
The home is prominently located in the center of Long Valley, has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and a separate second dwelling with two bedrooms and one bathroom. And its listed for sale for $750,000.
Its a 251-year-old house, so its going to take that special person who loves historic, big homes, said Greg Brozowski, who listed it along with Bonnie Cerra, both of Coldwell Banker Realty in Mendham. Its in very good condition but its not a turnkey center hall colonial at the end of a cul-de-sac.

(41,728 posts)I see it from the road when I go out that way. It's a beautiful house, situated just right on the property.
Did you click the "All Photos" link? It shows pictures of each room, and yes, they are huge. This would be a nightmare to heat.
They are a nightmare to decorate, too, with modern standards.
My house is from 1850, and it has 20" thick walls. However, it is not like this because it is a carriage house. The biggest rooms are in the center of the house and are that size, but there are two additions on each end where the rooms are more reasonably sized. The additions were put on in 1950, I think.
Old houses can have old house nightmares. I just went through a plumbing one that cost me around 7 grand.

(52,781 posts)Must be a bear to heat, and the bathtubs are about what, 1910? So many decisions to make. Colonial or 19th century manor house? Do they have drawings or plans of the original? Who built it? You had to have some money to make 20" thick walls.
