New York Democrats settle on April presidential primary

ALBANY - New York Democrats are betting they can play a key role in choosing the party's presidential nominee next year even if their primary is late in the national selection process.

State Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs said New York is likely to hold its presidential primaries on April 28 of 2020, more than two months after the national race kicks off with the Iowa Caucus. New York's presidential primary has moved around the calendar in the past two decades, with three of the last five in March and one as early as February.

President Donald J. Trump is expected to be the Republican nominee, but the Democratic nomination is up for grabs with numerous candidates in the running.

The 2020 date, which would take place about a week later than New York's 2016 presidential primary, was chosen by Jacobs because it ensures the state will have a disproportionate share of delegates to award at the Democratic National Convention in July. Only California, with 495 delegates, would have a larger say than New York's 327 delegates.
