Calls for Cuomo to Sign Legislation Loosening GPA Requirements for Teachers

New York has one of the most rigorous teacher prep programs in the country.

Within five years of graduating, those looking to become teachers must also get their master’s degree as well as completing numerous certification exams.

But there are challenges that go along with being accepted into that program.

Under current state law, if a student wants to be accepted into a graduate-level teacher and educational program, they must achieve at least a 3.0 minimum grade point average.

They should be held to higher standards and paid accordingly.

Those that do should be paid well. Too often its not the case.

almost every single legislative session and this is getting to the point of driving people away from this profession (teaching)...I have talked to several friends of mine, who are now in other fields, who spoke of this, sure they may be certified and qualified one season/year, but then after a legislative session, then more requirements appear and teachers must arrange their schedules yet again for another requirement...
