Cuomo to back early counting of absentee ballots, changes to domestic violence laws in State of the

State

ALBANY — Voting rights, strengthening domestic violence law and tenant protections will all be on the agenda as Gov. Cuomo unveils his policy wish list as part of his State of the State address next week.

The governor revealed Friday that he is backing several election-related measures that will increase the amount of time voters can request an absentee ballot, ensure the counting of mail-in ballots happens as they arrive and expand early voting hours.

“At a time when the Trump administration seeks to strip Americans of their voting rights, we did see a lot of concern during election time,” Cuomo said during a press briefing. “We want New York to be a champion of voting rights.”

The proposals will face little resistance from Cuomo’s fellow Dems in the Legislature who have passed several election reform measures over the past two years.
