NY voting set to begin as counties send first batch of mail ballots to voters

Let the voting begin.

With 46 days to go before the Nov. 5 election, New York fired the starting gun on Friday as counties sent their first batches of mail-in ballots to voters who requested them. All New Yorkers now have the option to vote by mail instead of in person under a 2023 state law that made permanent a pandemic-era practice.

Voters can request a mail ballot online or in person at their county Board of Elections. Completed ballots must be mailed to the county election office no later than Oct. 26, although they can still be dropped off in person after that — up until polls close at 9 p.m. on Nov. 5.

Here are more details about the new mail-in voting system; how it differs from traditional absentee ballots; and why voters have been getting mail-ballot applications sent to their homes without asking for them.
