Cannabis-related ER visits spiked in New York after legalization, including in mid-Hudson

The newly reported ER stats on cannabis underscored rising concerns about the drug's health risks, including a recent groundbreaking study that revealed young people under the age 50 who consume marijuana are six times more likely to experience a heart attack than their counterparts.

Among the findings: Cannabis-related ER visits in New York totaled 135,324 in 2023, which was up from 58,578 in 2019. In the mid-Hudson region, the tally of cannabis-related ER visits nearly tripled during that same span, reaching 6,109 in 2023. That was among the largest increases statewide, joining similar large spikes in New York City and Central New York. In the Finger Lakes region, cannabis-related ER visits increased about 24% during that same span, reaching 3,971 in 2023.
