Court upholds move to even-year local elections in New York

New York officials won the latest round in a court battle over a law that will force certain local elections to be held in even-numbered years to align with state and federal races.

A slew of counties and towns with elections in odd-numbered years sued to challenge the 2023 state law as an infringement on their authority, and they won a ruling in Onondaga County last year. But an Appellate Division panel reversed that decision on Wednesday, May 7, saying the law was valid and takes effect immediately.
