City comptroller's race heats up as first TV ad airs

Mark Levine speaks fluent Spanish, has a working grasp of Hebrew and Greek — and knows a bit of Mandarin.

Some may see those foreign-language skills on display Monday night if during the Knicks-Celtics playoff game, when a new TV ad will air showing Levine conversing with New Yorkers in all four languages.

"Speaking different languages is my way of connecting to New Yorkers,” he said in an interview.

Levine, the Manhattan borough president, is the first candidate in the race for city comptroller to begin airing ads, with the help of a substantial fundraising lead.
