What makes a village election different? Waterford voters prepare to choose new mayor
VILLAGE OF WATERFORD, N.Y. (NEWS10) Local village elections are coming up across the Capital Region. In the Village of Waterford, the longtime mayor is stepping down after nearly three decades in office. Two new candidates are now hoping to take his place. A question some may have is what makes a village election unique compared to a bigger municipality election?
Villages are allowed to hold their own elections on dates set by village law which are often in March, while cities typically hold elections in November with the general election.
The candidates, Michelle Cleary and Craig Falcone, are running to lead a village of about 2,200 people. Its been 28 years since the village of Waterford has held a contested election for mayor. Both candidates are Republicans. With a smaller population and budget, being a village mayor comes with different challenges than running a larger city.
We also need to be good stewards of the funds that we receive and so how are we improving our community but best utilizing our resources, not overspending, but also looking for practical ways and partnerships and opportunities to maximize the resources that are out there, said Cleary.
