'I resent it': Teacher exodus hits 'Trump stronghold' due to federal budget cuts

Alexander Willis

A county in North Carolina where nearly 70% of voters favored President Donald Trump in 2024 is facing an exodus of educators following budget cuts to the Department of Education, cuts that have left some residents feeling betrayed.

During Trump’s second term, the Education Department has seen its workforce nearly cut in half, around $900 million worth of research contracts canceled, and around $600 million gutted from teacher-training grants, and all in the name of eliminating “wasteful spending” at the agency, which Trump called a “con job.”

And for some Montgomery County educators, the cuts have not only driven them to different jobs, but to resentment.

“I resent being considered government waste,” said Katie Kimrey, who’s led a 20-year career as an educator, speaking with The Washington Post. “If my kids were grown, shoot, I’d probably be gone, too.”

This was years before Trump came along. But modern Republicans have long been contemptuous of schools, teachers, education.

Remember the prohibitions in our country forbidding teaching slaves to read?

Now it's not just the slaves. Our corporate overlords and their flunkies in government wants us to be too ignorant to recognize what they are doing to us and our country.

Problem is other countries are still pushing forward with innovation, education, and problem-solving. We cannot compete with a world that is better educated, that respects truth and facts, that understands science and math.

In the good old days when Democrats controlled the NC General Assembly, our teacher salaries were good, compared to neighboring states. Since 2011, when Republicans took over, our teacher salaries have been awful, coupled with those stupid “school choice” vouchers.

I don't see anything about that in the article, and I don't think it's fair to make assumptions about how a particular indivicual may have voted. Red states are red because Republicans are in the majority there, not because Democrats are nonexistent.

In Indiana, they're already talking about not spending funds on special ed (my daughter is a special ed teacher there).

In Florida, they've already decided to no longer give Certificates of Completion to those special needs students who would normally have qualified for them. Just a slap in the face, probably hoping parents won't continue to send them to school.

right now on the latest in NC. They've been on vacation in Italy.. Lucky dogs!

But I will talk with them soon and find out.

That's Horrible and par for the course in Florida. It's so incredibly Sad.

My sister (her mother) in New York retired as a Special Ed teacher in New York.. teaching & guiding kids for decades.

I Hope the Best for your daughter, Rad.

Same to your niece. It's a difficult time to be a teacher of any type, let alone special ed in a red state.

Rhonda Perkins, who voted for Trump, defended her support for the president to The Washington Post, while at the same time, criticizing him for some of his policies.

“I think he’s awful, but he protected my values,” Perkins said.

"I think he's awful, but he protected my values", is the new; "I thought he would just fuck-over the minorities".
