Election challenge filed against Washington city council candidate (D)

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) - A formal election challenge has been filed against Washington City Council candidate and Mayor Pro Tem Anthony Tyre, as the Beaufort County GOP says documents suggest he doesn’t live in the city. However, Tyre says he does.

Mayor Pro Tem Anthony Tyre was elected to the Washington City Council in 2023, and with early voting days away, he says he’s looking for a spot on the city council.

The Beaufort County GOP is now challenging Tyre’s election eligibility for the city council. Last Monday, resident and voter Gail Breed filed an election qualification challenge to the candidacy of Tyre.

“We feel we have a responsibility to support Ms. Breed’s challenge, which is a legitimate challenge,” Former Beaufort County GOP Chairman Greg Dority said.
