Minot to test new absentee ballot law in August election

MINOT, ND (KXNET) — A new law is changing the way absentee ballots are counted, and this is being put to the test for the first time next month in Minot.

Minot’s upcoming mayoral race on August 5 is the first time North Dakota’s new absentee ballot law is happening.

This new law now requires all absentee ballots to arrive at the county auditor’s office before polls close on election day in order to be counted.

“Now it can be dropped off at the county auditor’s office up until polls close on election day, which is 7 p.m. So we still have the drop box available until then or up in our office until then, so that’s the biggest change for people is realizing on that day before we’re not going to accept postmarks so you should probably bring it into the office,” Marissa Haman, the Ward County auditor/treasurer said.
