State rep who backed distracted driver law gets a ticket for using phone in car

Oregon state Rep. Julie Parrish told KATU that while she on the way to the station for an interview, she was ticketed for using her cellphone to look for directions, but she isn't mad about it.

In fact, the bill that caused her to get the ticket -- Oregon's new, much tougher, distracted driving law -- is one she supported.

Under the new law, drivers are prohibited from operating cell phones while they drive, including at stop signs and lights. That means no futzing around with your navigation system.

Drivers are allowed a single touch or swipe to activate their phones. Everything else is off-limits.
