GOP voter registration gains continue in NEPA counties, early-year data shows
About a month into 2025 and a week into the second presidency of Donald Trump, the number of Democrats changing their voter registrations to Republican in Northeast Pennsylvania continued to exceed that of Republicans making the opposite switch, state voter registration statistics show.
In now reliably red Luzerne County where Republicans gained the voter registration advantage over Democrats in September for the first time since the 1970s that advantage ballooned to 5,304 as of Monday, when registered GOP voters outnumbered Democrats there 89,872 to 84,568. The ongoing Republican gains reflect both new registrations and voters switching parties, with 263 Luzerne County Democrats changing their registration to Republican so far this year, compared to just 54 Republicans switching to the Democratic Party.
More Democrats also switched to Republican than vice-versa in Lackawanna County through roughly the first four weeks of the year, though Democrats still maintain a substantial registration advantage in the county overall.
Data updated Monday showed 80 Lackawanna County Democrats switching their registrations to Republican so far in 2025, and 17 county Republicans switching the other way. Modest as those numbers are this early in the new year, they do reflect the continuation of a trend from 2024, when 1,946 registered Democrats in Lackawanna County became Republicans and just 549 registered Lackawanna County Republicans became Democrats.
