Primary 2025: Scranton Mayoral Race

Pennsylvania’s municipal primary election is a week from Tuesday and some of the most important races take place for mayor of Keystone State cities, boroughs and towns.

PoliticsPA will count down to the May 20 election by previewing the key races throughout the Commonwealth. Today, we begin with the contest to serve as mayor of Scranton.

Incumbent Paige Cognetti is running for a second full term as mayor of “The Electric City.” She won a seven-person special election in November 2019 and easily won reelection in 2021, defeating City Controller John Murray in the Democratic primary and Republican Darwin Lee Shaw II that November.

Cognetti will square off against Bob Sheridan in the Democratic primary, while Trish Beynon and Lynn Labrosky will contend for the GOP nomination.

There may be two other candidates for the position running as independents. Former City Councilman Gene Barrett and Michael Mancini will qualify for the November general election ballot if they obtain enough petition signatures by August 1.
