Pittsburgh's public TV and radio stations to lose millions in federal funding

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced Friday that it will be winding down operations

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced Friday that it will be winding down operations, ensuring the loss of millions in federal funding for Pennsylvania public radio and TV stations next year.

The announcement followed the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee’s approval Thursday of the Fiscal Year 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations bill. For the first time in more than five decades, the bill provides no funding to CPB.

With the organization's shutdown inevitable, Pittsburgh stations are preparing to face the consequences.

The CPB, established by the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, is an independent nonprofit corporation that allocates $535 million annually in taxpayer funds to more than 1,500 public media stations, including PBS and NPR. In 2024, that amounted to $14.5 million to stations in Pennsylvania, $3 million of which was directed to Pittsburgh organizations, according to CPB’s website.
