Eugene DePasquale's plans for the Pa. Democratic Party (if elected chair)

It’s no secret that after devastating losses in 2024, Democrats face an uphill battle to convince voters that the party understands their concerns. Here in Pennsylvania, that’s meant struggles with fundraising and a painful erosion in the party’s longstanding voter-registration advantage. The challenges are daunting enough that when Eugene DePasquale confirmed he was seeking to be the state party’s interim chair, I wasn’t sure whether to wish him luck.

“I think people know I’d rather be the closer for the Pirates in the pennant chase,” joked DePasquale. “But that ship may have sailed.”

In any case, many party insiders say putting him at the helm is the kind of shrewd front-office move that the Pirates ought to be making.

When members of the state Democratic committee meet in Lancaster on Sept. 6, DePasquale is almost certain to be chosen to finish out the four-year term of chair Sharif Street, who earlier this week announced he would step down to run for Congress.
