Pa. House Republican leaders urge U.S. Senate to avoid shutdown

Shutdown could impact thousands of Pa. workers, families receiving benefits

Pennsylvania's House Republican leaders in Harrisburg strongly urged the U.S. Senate on Monday to dodge a federal government shutdown as a Sept. 30 deadline loomed, according to a letter obtained by the Post-Gazette.

“We urgently call on the Senate to immediately pass a clean short-term funding extension to prevent a government shutdown that would deeply harm hardworking Americans across our states,” the lawmakers, led by Republican leader state Rep. Jesse Topper and GOP Whip Rep. Tim O’Neal, wrote to U.S. Senate leaders.

The letter was sent just a few hours before President Donald Trump and Democratic and Republican lawmakers were poised to meet in the White House to discuss a stopgap spending plan that’s yet again put the spotlight on Washington’s stark political divides.

A shutdown could jeopardize thousands of Pennsylvania workers' paychecks indefinitely, and leave many families facing the loss of critical services and benefits. The standoff — with Republicans balking at Democrats’ call for Trump and the GOP to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies and reverse some of this summer’s cuts to Medicaid — comes as Pennsylvania’s budget is more than three months overdue.

I'm not in the habit of posting stories about the GOP leaders in Harrisburg, but this story is rather remarkable. It's also surprising that the Post-Gazette printed it, but here we are.

The potential for an extended shutdown is better than 1 in 3 imho.

Extended? 3 weeks. Into November? possible. January? No one knows what Trump has planned.

You see uncertainty is fear, and fear is uncertainty.

It returns to session on October 7. She should be sworn in then. She can't legally be blocked for being sworn in and Johnson has said she will be sworn in when the House returns to regular session on October 7. The shutdown will not impact that.

For the last 90 days it is rich indeed. Schools districts and services are now in dire need of funds thanks to the GOP.

Pennsylvania is the only state in the country that has been unable to pass some form of a budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Senate Republicans rejected the proposal, pushing for a balanced budget that wouldn’t dip into the commonwealth’s roughly $3 billion surplus or $7 billion rainy day funds. They also rejected a spending plan that passed the House in July that would have cut nearly $1 billion from Shapiro’s proposal.
