Lackawanna County commissioner candidates debate ahead of special election

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A full crowd turned out for Thursday night’s Lackawanna County Commissioner debate, as the three candidates vying for the open seat, Democrat Thom Welby, Republican Chet Merli, and Independent Michael Cappellini, laid out their positions on key county issues just weeks before the November special election.

The debate came after Brenda Sacco’s swearing-in as commissioner earlier this week, following a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling that upheld the county’s Home Rule Charter process for her appointment. But with the special election looming, the winner will determine who fills the seat through the end of the current term and possibly shift the balance on the board.

All three candidates said they would serve the full term if elected, even as the legal questions surrounding the appointment linger.

“If it comes to the point where there is some kind of challenge, I can promise you immensely that I am here to serve as your county commissioner and to ensure that the voice of the people is heard with a free and fair election," said Cappellini.
