Providence City Council President Rachel Miller won't seek reelection
Providence City Council President Rachel Millers eight-year tenure on the capital citys ruling body will come to an end. She announced Thursday, June 11, that she will not seek reelection to her Ward 13 seat.
Miller, a Democrat, announced the news via Facebook and in an interview with independent journalist Steve Ahlquist. She wrote online that she had made the difficult decision not to run for re-election so I can be more present for other parts of my life.
Miller said she plans to serve the remaining six months of her term representing her ward encompassing the citys most iconically Italian-American neighborhood of Federal Hill, plus portions of the surrounding West End and Downtown.
The first openly queer person to serve as president on the council, Millers tenure has been characterized by her leadership of a largely progressive policymaking body one which has tackled, or attempted to tackle, issues like housing costs, police oversight, the aftershocks of federal immigration enforcement, and wider geopolitical contexts such as the Israel-Palestine conflict.
