Voter turnout lower than expected for McColl mayor election

MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Voter turnout for the McColl mayoral race Tuesday is lower than expected based on turnout numbers, absentee ballots and early voting, according to officials.

Officials with the Marlboro County Voter Registration and Elections office said as of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, about 343 of the town's more than 1,700 registered voters had cast ballots, including totals for early and absentee voting.

Officials are hoping that at least 15 percent of registered voters will turnout before polls close.

The special election is being held to fill the unexpired term of McColl's previous mayor, George Garner, II, who died in a crash in late November in Darlington County.
