Commissioners debate term limits, MSCS election changes

It’s one of the questions Shelby County Commissioners began debating as they heard from a state lawmaker and a community activist who says change is needed.

“We need to put some structure on this school board,” said MSCS parent Charles Lampkin.

Commissioners weighed in on a new law sponsored by State Representative Torrey Harris and State Senator Brent Taylor to put all school board positions on the same election cycle as county-wide offices.

“This is to increase voter turnout to put us in compliance with what previous law was technically and to make sure individuals don’t have an opportunity to make an impact on our child lives from kindergarten all the way past the time they graduate,” Tennessee Rep. Torrey Harris said.
