Local Democratic candidates, parties hope to fix low representation in local election

OHNSON CITY, Tenn., (WJHL) – Only four counties in Northeast Tennessee have a Democratic ballot in their local elections, with the majority of those counties having fewer than five candidates running.

While these may seem like small numbers, local and state Democratic leaders think it’s the small spark needed to spark change for the party.

“We have seen a historic level of investment and a historic level of recruitment all across the state, not least of which is Northeast Tennessee,” said Tennessee Democratic Party chair Rachel Campbell. “You look at a place like Sullivan County, where they have really done a great job recruiting this year. You go and look for community leaders, and you look for people who are fed up, you look for people who feel that they want to serve their community in a new and different way.”

Terry Marek is one of those community members who wanted something different in the Sullivan County commission. This election cycle, he’s running for county commissioner from district one.
