Texas Congressman Al Green is changing districts due to the new Texas gerrymandered map

I have known Al for over 20 years. Al represents CD 9 which includes part of my county and Al always told us that we can bring complaints to him since my congressional district has been represented by assholes for a long time (while before my time, Tom DeLay was the congresscritter). Now we have an asshole named Troy Nehls.

Al has introduced articles of impeachment against trump in both trump's first and second terms. It did not surprise anyone to see that Al was one of the congresscritters targeted. Again, I have known Al for a long time. Al introduced me to Congressman John Lewis as a voting rights attorney, and I have worked on voter protection efforts with Al. Al even had me attend a Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee event and again introduced me as a voting rights attorney. My oldest and Sheila's son were in the same class for two years and Sheila knew that I was a corporate attorney.

Al is one of the Texas Democrats targeted by trump's and Abbott's redistricting. CD 9 has been redrawn so that it does not include my county and is now a solid GOP district. Briscoe Cain is now running in that district.

CD 18 used to be represented by Sheila Jackson Lee (she and Al had some fun fights) and then by Sylvester Turner (who passed away last March). Greg Abbott is an asshole and kept this congressional seat open until the election this week where 16 or so people ran to replace Turner. There will be a run-off between Christian Menefee and Amanda Edwards in January . The seat will remain vacant until that runoff.

When my oldest and I first look at the new maps, the first thing that both my oldest and I thought that Al was going to move to CD 18. Al lives in the new CD 18 or close to the new CD 18. My oldest lives in both new and old CD 18 and voted for Menefee in the election this week. Amanda Edwards is also a very strong candidate and would be a great congressperson.

My oldest just texted me this announcement.

Under Texas law, one files to run in the primary in early December. The runoff between Christian Menefee and Amanda Edwards will not be until January of 2026 and the primary election will be in March 2026. This means that Al Green, Christian Menefee and Amanda Edwards will all compete in the March 2026 primary.

I like Al and it is a shame that he was targeted. It will be interesting to see what happens here. I also like the two younger Democrats who are in the runoff. This will be an interesting primary.
