Early Travis County election results may be delayed in the March primaries. Here's why
AUSTIN (KXAN) When polls close on Election Day and Austinites start eagerly refreshing their phones for election results (which were sure you get on KXAN.com), it may take longer this primary election because of a shift in early voting tabulations.
At the request of the Travis County Republican Party regarding early voting tabulation procedures, early voting ballots will not be counted until Election Day. As a result, early voting results may not be available when polls close at 7 p.m., and posting of results to the website could be delayed, Travis County Clerk Dyana Limon-Mercado said.
Previously, Travis County was allowed to tabulate early votes and hold them confidentially until results were released around 7 p.m., at the end of Election Day voting.
Typically, Travis County voters are used to refreshing at 7 p.m. or 7:15 and seeing those early voting initial results come up. That will not be the case moving forward, Limon-Mercado said. It could be 7:30, 8 p.m., 9 p.m., 10 p.m. before those first results come out, and that will be much more typical going forward once the new law has been fully put into effect.
